Eva Street Residence was designed by architect Chris Cobb and is located in Austin, Texas. Chris says that the one of the biggest challenges when developing the plans for this project was a 150+ oak tree, situated in the middle of the property. Instead of bringing it down, the construction was built in strong relationship with the tree, sheltering the people inside without making them foreigners in their environment. Here is more information from the architect: “The house is clad in Brazilian Redwood siding and corrugated weathering steel, which adds scale, texture, and a melding of the house with its surrounding landscape while at the same time softening the sharp, crisp geometry of the structure.  The wood cladding extends into the interior of the house, which is also defined by dark chocolate bamboo floors, crisp white walls, meticulous custom made cabinets, and clean detailing.”  With all that lush vegetation around it, the home looks secluded and protected . We recently received an e-mail from Stellavie, a graphic design studio from Hamburg, Germany, informing us of their new lampshade collection. We enjoyed their work and decided to showcase 10 of our favourite designs. But before that, here is the project description they sent us: “The lampshades are lasercut with various patterns (abstract but delicately arranged, precious embroidery transformed into contemporary pixel-baroque) on the most beautiful paper we can find: the papers are sometimes structured, sometimes shimmering, changing in colour depending on the perspective and always of the highest standard. Within our approach we are fascinated with a multitude of directions: graphic design, typography, interior and product design – in general: a love for details and surprising ideas. Graphic design meets clever understanding of materials meets modern production techniques meets interior design ideas. Carefully crafted design is translated into glowing shades of beauty.” Do you like the atmosphere these lampshades manage to create?

Whether you rent or own and live in the city or suburbs, balconies are a great addition to any building. They provide the perfect transition between the indoors and the wilderness, and add a marvelous architectural element to a space.

The word balcony is Italian and comes from the word Balcone which means scaffold. Technically it is simply a platform that is protected by balustrades or a rail. The cool thing about balconies is that they have historically been used as a soap box or stage, to hold ceremonies or public announcements. And now the modern day balcony is much more informal, dynamic and spacious. A place for pontification, relaxation, sun bathing, a breath of fresh air, a different perspective of the what lies ahead, and maybe even a love connection. Let’s face it, if there was no balcony there would be no Romeo and Juliet… or at least their story wouldn’t have been so fantastic!

Below are some really cool balconies that express different styles and functions. Some of which can easily slip you into relaxation mode for a whole afternoon or electrify you by their striking views of the landscape. Either way you’ll surely marvel, so enjoy…
