Getting joints to fit snugly is one of the major objectives in carpentry, and nothing introduces the techniques so well as the halving joint. As for the perfect finish, that’s the role of the mitre.

There are many situations in woodwork when you need a joint that’s fast and simple, but also neat and strong. And this is where halving joints come into their own. Despite their simplicity, they’re very effective joints because the two pieces of wood are cut so they interlock together, either face to face or edge to edge, making the joint as strong as ¡ª if not stronger than ¡ª the timber itself. They are used almost exclusively for building frameworks, joining the rails (side pieces) either at a corner or in a cross absolutely flush. You end up with a frame that’s neat enough to be on show and sturdy enough to need no reinforcement

Mitre joints, though not strictly speaking considered halving joints as there’s no interlocking, are halved to make up a perfect 90¡ã angle. In this section, only the simple mitre is dealt with.

Strength of joints

There are three things that affect the strength of a halving joint ¡ª the size of the timber, the quality of the timber, and any reinforcement you add.

The size of timber is important because it governs the amount of adhesive in the joint; the greater the areas glued together, the stronger the joint will be Usually problems only arise when you are trying to 10in thin pieces of timber together ¡ª it’s almost impossible to get the joint to stay rigid. Regarding timber quality, hardwoods rarely present a problem, but with softwoods, splitting can occur which will seriously weaken the joint. You should, therefore, reject timber containing knots, cracks and other potential weak spots.

In many cases, the correct adhesive is all the reinforcement you need ¡ª use a good quality PVA woodworking adhesive, or, if the joint will be subjected to heat or moisture, a urea formaldehyde woodworking adhesive. If still greater strength is required ¡ª this is more likely on corner halving joints than on cross halvings – you should drive screws through the overlaps, or, for a more natural look, drill a hole right through and glue in a length of dowel. Both the dowels and screws are set like the spots on a dice to stop the joint twisting.

Simple butt joints must be reinforced in some way to have strength, but with mitred butt joints this would defeat the decorative aim Because of this, they are normally reserved for situations where strength is not required ¡ª picture frames and decorative edgings, such as door architraves for example.

You can use either a chisel or a piece of glasspaper to take off any unevenness in the timber, although it’ll be quicker to use a chisel to clear out the edges so that the corners are absolutely square. When the pieces finally fit neatly, spread adhesive on both faces of the joint and hold them in place with a G-cramp (protecting the wood’s surface with scrap timber) until the glue has set. Remove the cramp, and add any reinforcing screws or dowels that may be needed, drilling pilot holes first.

Painting the inside of your house is something you can do quite easily. Matte-finished paint is extremely easy to paint with. Your local home-improvement store can fill you in on what supplies you need. It can even teach you what materials you need and the procedures you need to go through to successfully paint your inside walls. You could even learn how to do stenciling or other decorative techniques.  

Curtain Call

You can replace your old, faded curtains with bright new ones at a low cost. Hit the bargain stores for these instead of the high price stores though. Remember you are trying to keep everything as affordable as possible. You also could choose new blinds, shades or other window dressings.

Kitchen Duty

Kitchen duty involves brightening up the kitchen you have. You can just replace the cabinet doors with new ones if they are too badly aged. Another way to brighten them up would be to paint them. If they have a protective finish on them it will have to be removed first through stripping or sanding. Then all you have to do is use a good quality high-gloss or satin-finish paint to lift their look. Also replace the old knobs with new ones. Don’t forget the drawers either.

Clean the Carpets

Simply shampooing the carpets will do wonders for your whole house. Carpets have a way of getting stained and grungy looking if not cleaned periodically. We walk on them all day without realizing we are grounding in dirt which dims the color of the carpet. You can rent shampooers or have it done professionally; either way is an affordable investment in your house.  

Shine the Floors

If you have wood floors gently clean them and if they have a finish on them you may need to strip and redo the floors. In the event you have tile floors though examine the floors to see if there are cracked tiles the need replacing. If you can still get that same style of tile most of the time the broken ones can easily be replaced. You might want a professional for this job if you are not handy with your hands.

Basking in the Bathroom

You want to be able to enjoy your bathrooms. What is fun about looking at a bunch of worn out fixtures though? Replace these unsightly fixtures with shiny new ones. Do you have a sink, toilet or tub in dire need of attention? These too can be replaced or in some cases resurfaced. Now this might cost you a bit for the tub but a sink or toilet is not that large of an expense.

Doing the above improvements is very affordable and well worth doing for the look and value of your home.

Here is an interesting chair designed by Neil Macqueen for  Unofuori Studio. The Diviso Stool has an original appearance, was made from lightweight materials and can hold up to 120 kilos. The uncommon chair can easily contract and expand, making it possible for it to provide seating place for one, two or three persons. The designer sent us the press release for this product, which has been already exhibited at Designersblock 2010 as part of the London Design Festival: “Creating a piece of furniture that flowed and changed with the users perspective, while also being easy and cost effective to make; was at the heart of the stool’s creation. The resulting stool consists of a single profile, one shape, whose defining feature is what is missing and not what is on show. The negative space created inside the Diviso stool plays with light and perspective, creating a seaming complexity through the repetition of the single simplistic profile. This principle of repetition also lends the stool to multiple forms, the Diviso stool can extend or contract in size, seating three or just the one person; depending on how many profiles are used“. According to the same press release, four versions of the Diviso Stool are available: all natural plywood, stained black plywood, aluminium/plywood, and a limited edition ghost. Crealev are the ones who designed these fun Levitating Lamps. Based on magnetic levitation, the lamps atract attention while defying gravity. The company`s levitating technologies evolved from a professional collaboration between Angela Jansen and Ger Jansen – daughter and father. They combined their expertise in Dutch design and mechatronics to develop this levitating technology. These levitating lamps, part of the LOS! Collection, are either classic or modern in design, touching opposing poles when it comes to the looks, but using the same amazing  technology. There are two beautiful designs to choose from: LOS#1 and LOS#2 are the two different design routes taken by Crealev. Using LED lights, Los#1 was created in a classic design, to accentuate the combination between vintage design and modern technology, while Los#2 has a contemporary shape. The lamps feature gaps of 3,4cm each and come in black and white.
